Andy Warhol

Pittsburgh 1928 – 1987 New York
Andrew Warhola was born on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a poor farming family. He later changed his Hungarian birth name, “Andrew Warhola”, to its American form. At the age of eight, he contracted chorea minor, a pigment disorder. To distract himself, Andy Warhol began drawing and reading comics, thus discovering his passion for art. Starting in 1945, he studied commercial art in his hometown. He graduated at the age of 21 with degrees in painting and design.

New York was the center of modern art at that time. For this reason, the young Andy Warhol moved to the metropolis after completing his studies in 1949. Upon arriving in New York, he developed a new design that was very well received by newspapers, magazines, and advertising clients. While the technique itself had existed for some time, Warhol reinvented screen printing and approached painting in an innovative way.

In 1952, Andy Warhol held his first exhibition, and shortly thereafter—in 1956—his work was featured at the renowned Museum of Modern Art in New York.
He created simple portraits of Hollywood stars, music icons, and comic and cartoon characters, combining them with silkscreen printing. He collected numerous images and assembled them on a single sheet. In 1962, he compiled all his works, creating a sensation with a major exhibition, and from then on was considered a celebrated artist. Warhol subsequently founded “The Factory” with individual studios in New York. From this time onward, he mostly chose square canvases, on which he continued to depict celebrities, but also, more recently, sensational accidents. Warhol also began experimenting with film. In 1968, the American Valerie Solanas attempted to assassinate the then 40-year-old artist. After this attack, which he narrowly survived, Warhol withdrew more and more from public life. The painter became quieter and embarked on photography, art, and painting projects. He also wrote a play. His last work depicts the Last Supper by the renowned artist Leonardo da Vinci.

Andy Warhol had a profound impact on the art world. He popularized Pop Art and is considered its most important representative. Even today, Andy Warhol’s pictures and paintings are highly sought after and achieve record prices.
